Reading Lamps
Floor Lamps
Floor lamps are standing lamps that vary in height, they are used for generally lighting a room. Often, they are statement pieces; I.e., Tiffany lamps that are colourful with nature designs. However, the floor lamps can also be used for reading, these often are unobtrusive. For example, Origina Canada, is a company we carry that makes great reading lights, they are slender and give 50 watts of light. The lights can be halogen with a high and low setting or LED. Many of the floor lamps that are statement pieces are trilights; this gives the dual function of general light and reading light. Floor lamps come in just about every style; modern, traditional, midcentury modern, rustic, coastal, and etc.
Table Lamps
Table lamps are shorter than the others. They can provide a soft/mood light or be a directed light for tasks at a desk. In areas such as the office, desk lamps are designed to be simple, bright, and small. A desk lamp should not take up all your surface and are adjustable so you can move them. A lamp for your bedroom or living room is more for mood lighting. But, keep in mind the size of your furniture; if you have large furniture a skinny lamp will look out of place. If you are a reader a trilight lamp will give you three levels of light, one is good for ambience and two are good for reading.
The bedside table often has several items already on it, a good solution is to use the wall sconces that plugin. These wall sconces come out from the wall and are adjustable (great for reading in bed). They can be small and unobtrusive, or be traditional; have fabric shades like lamps. Either way they allow for more space on the side table.
